headed by a former federal prosecutor. president obama today named mary jo white as his choice for s.e.c. chair. as u.s. attorney in the southern district of new york, white helped prosecute mob bosses and terrorists. darren gersh reports. >> reporter: no one on wall street could miss the significance of picking a former federal prosecutor to lead the securities and exchange commission. the president drove the point home saying mary jo white had taken down the head of the gambino crime family, the terorists who bombed the world trade center, and many others. >> i'd say that's a pretty good run. you don't want to mess with mary jo. >> reporter: the s.e.c. has struggled to rebuild it's reputation and stature following the madoff scandal and the financial crisis and white signaled she would be an active reformer. >> the s.e.c., long a vital and positive force for the markets has a lot of hard and important work ahead of it. i would welcome the opportunity to lead those efforts. >> reporter: the president says white isn't easily intimidated, a requirement for the job facing the s.e.c.

wondering is this a signal from president obama that he's going to take a hard line on these test test test. man like jack lew. what do you think? >> i think it is. i think one of the key aspects of the second-term agenda regarding the economy and fiscal policy is to achieve a stable debt situation by the time the administration is heading out of town. and interestingly based on some spending cuts and tax increases that have been implemented so far, we're pretty close. and jack lew intimately knows what it takes to get from here to there. now, i think you, also, to, about other issues of the treasury's beat, international currency, financial markets implementing the dodd-frank issue. as i mentioned, financial reform is still incomplete. so jack lew is going to have to oversee those as well. >> susie: let me get back to the budget issue. jack lew was also the architect of this sequester mechanism. a lot of people are worried if that kicks in, the automatic spending cuts, that, you know, that would really be a bad thing for the economy. some democrats are surprisingly saying maybe that's

president obama described his plan in las vegas today. >> we've got to lay out a path, a process that includes passing a background check, paying taxes, paying a penalty, learning english and then going to the back of the line behind all the folks who are trying to come here legally. that's only fair. (cheers and applause) all right? so that means it won't be a quick process but it will be a fair process and it will lift these individuals out of the shadows and give them a chance to earn their way to a green card and eventually to i citizenship. >> pelley: but first mr. obama said there would have to be stronger enforcement on the borders. his plan is similar to a bill that both democrats and republicans are introducing in the senate. this may be the best chance for immigration reform in decades. it could mean that a lot of families would not live in fear of being split up as bill whitaker found with the colin family in california. >> reporter: jamie colin helps his mother lupe at one of the family's two dry cleaners in southern california. do you feel like an american success story?

republicans to compromise on immigration after president obama won the latino vote by 71% in the november election. the senators behind the plan are a bipartisan group of heavy hitters. new york democrat charles schumer is their unofficial leader. >> we believe this will be the year congress finally gets it done. the politics on this issue have been turned upside down. for the first time ever there's more political risk in opposing immigration reform than in supporting it. >> reporter: their plan would grant illegal immigrants temporary legal status to stay in the country if they pass a criminal background check, pay a fine and back taxes and learn english. but they would have to get the back of the line for citizenship-- a process that would only start once border security has been improved with more agents and more drones. in 2007, republicans brought down a similar plan arguing it amounts to amnesty. but arizona's john mccain who championed reform then and now says he senses a major shift among his g.o.p. colleagues. >> you look at the demographics of this country and the rising hispan

. well, the last time that barack obama and hillary clinton sat down together to answer questions it was in a debate in the middle of a fight for the democratic presidential nomination. they were at each other's throats. well, today just days away from the end of her term as secretary of state, they sat down again together to answer questions. this time from steve kroft of "60 minutes". the joint interview, apparently, was the president's idea. >> reporter: why did you want to do this together? a joint interview. >> well, the main thing is i just wanted to have a chance to publicly say that you can because i think hillary will go down as one of the finest secretary of states we've had. it has been a great collaboration over the last four years. i'm going to miss her. i wish she was sticking around but she has logged in so many miles i can't begrudge her to want to take it easy for a little bit. but i want the country to appreciate just what an extraordinary role she's played during the course of my administration and a lot of the sucsuccesses we've had internationally because of her
